There are so many options for electric vehicles now, and Hyundai is proud to lead the way with more hybrid and electric cars than ever before for Montgomery drivers. If you’re interested in an electric vehicle, we can help alleviate your concerns about charging at home, charging on the road, and the average electric car charging time. Our experts can answer any questions you have about owning an EV as your next new vehicle. In this guide, we’ll dive deeper into the question, “How long does it take to charge an electric car?”
In this section, we’ll go over how long it takes to charge an electric car based on the charging level. The electric car charging time varies based on the type of charging you use.
Your new EV will come with a Level 1 charger. Most drivers keep this in the vehicle as a backup rather than using it as a sole charging method. Level 1 chargers provide an estimated four miles of range per hour when you charge at home using an ordinary outlet. You could charge your EV to 100% in 24 to 48 hours, depending on how large the battery is and how low the charge level is before you start charging.
Level 2 (240V+) chargers must be professionally installed at your home. These charging boxes must be able to handle a specific electric current load. A Level 2 charger offers must faster charging times than ordinary Level 1 chargers. Level 2 chargers provide an estimated 24 miles of range per charging hour. You could charge an EV in 6 to 10 hours with Level 2 charging. Your EV will charge completely in your garage overnight while you sleep!
Level 2 public charging stations are more and more common in Mason and surrounding areas. There are more public charging stations on the way! These public stations provide similar charging speeds to Level 2 home chargers. You can often find them at major retailers like Walgreens, Kohl’s, Target, and Whole Foods, as well as at universities, hotels, and parking garages. You’ll likely have to pay a certain charge per kWh, but it’s still cheaper than gas. These are great if you need an extra boost before getting home or heading to a Level 3 DC Fast Charger.
Some public chargers offer 150 kW rapid charging. These can power up your EV faster than any other charging method. However, they’re usually only available along major highways and freeways and can’t be installed at home. Level 3 chargers provide up to 60 to 100 miles of range per twenty minutes of charging. You could fully charge your EV in an hour. Again, you’ll be charged for using these stations. The lone downside is that DC Fast Charging increases the heat inside the battery, which could make it wear down faster if you use DC Fast Charging as your everyday charging method.
Do you drive a plug-in hybrid? Your charging times could be much lower compared to a full EV. Chances are this type of vehicle will take between one to four hours to fully charge using Level 2 charging. Why? PHEVs don’t rely solely on electricity as an energy source! When the PHEV’s battery is empty, the car automatically moves to gasoline power. PHEV batteries typically have an all-electric range of 20 to 50 miles, depending on the vehicle you own.
Most home chargers offer 3.7-kW or 7-kW charging. Public stations, on the other hand, offer 22-kW charging, 43-kW to 50-kW rapid charging, and 150-kW rapid charging. As a result, for some applicable vehicles, you could get a full charge in an hour or so. In other cases, it could take four hours, six hours, or 11 hours for a full charge. Again, it depends on the type of charging level you use.
